Bank of America’s (NYSE: BAC) CEO is working hard on figuring out ways to get mid career women back into the workforce. I like this. She doesn’t have to do this. She has more money than anyone could ever know what to do with, and a good job and yet she is standing for things that actually have a chance of making a difference. Kudos to Anne Finucane. I feel like a lot of people talk about hiring more women and minorities, but there is less talk about actually retaining those people once hired. I listened to a podcast recently where they interviewed the former highest ranking minority at Twitter. He talked about a culture that paid lip service to being more diverse, but in all actuality didn’t care. I feel like that’s the case with a lot of companies. It’s like when parents demand that their kids eat healthy but gorge themselves on candy all day. Eventually, your kid is going to become unhealthy, and you can’t just say “but I told him not to do it!” Only time will tell if BofA makes actionable changes or they just wanted some good press. I am an eternal optimist who hopes that it is the former. Because that is the case, and I have a history of believing in companies that have a soul, I think that BofA could be a good play. Sure, they make predatory loans and they are still a bank in the end. But you are probably going to hold some banks in your portfolio, so why not make it the one who is trying to promote a culture that will probably make its product a lot better in the near future?
